DEALING WITH CAPTIVITY

The greatest thing that can happen to any man is for him to come out of captivity. In the same vein, the greatest tragedy for a man is for him to enter into and remain under bondage. Men and women who live under the shackles of satan and his lieutenants in one form or the other are living outside the will of God.

Jesus said, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might

have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).

This makes it very clear that satan is the one who brings men and women into bondage, while Jesus is the bondage breaker. You must, therefore, allow the Lord to open your eyes to one of the most important benefits of His vicarious death-deliverance.

Salvation is the principal benefit of the cross. But it is by no means the only benefit. Deliverance from bondage, captivity and curses is part and parcel of what Jesus paid for when he declared; “It is finished.” Therefore, you must not allow anything in keep you under bondage. Neither must you allow anything to rob you of your complete rights in the gospel.

There are no questions as to the fact that we are now living in the last days. It is crystal clear that this is the last hour of the last days. God is fully in charge. This is the day of God’s power. We have come to a momentous era in human history. The Lord has arisen in His power and majesty more than He ever did before. He has continued to demonstrate His power in an unprecedented manner. He has continued to wrought great deliverance.

Sceptics have been confounded. Those who previously stood against the message of deliverance and spiritual warfare have changed gears. They have now accepted and identified with what God has been doing. After hearing and seeing remarkable evidences of spectacular deliverance, such people have swallowed their doubts and come to terms with the fact that total salvation and complete deliverance is God’s message for this hour.

After I have preached, taught and ministered deliverance to individuals and multitudes for a number of years, the Lord has given me fresh insights into His heartbeat.

The revelation given to me as divine blue-print on deliverance gave me a challenge which made me to decide to offer, in one single volume, the essentials of deliverance to all and sundry. I am confident in the Lord that every sincere soul who goes through what the Lord is saying to the Church today, with a decision to apply the practical details to his day-to-day affairs, will experience complete victory over all hostile demonic forces. The result, no doubt, will be wonderful. The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ will be healthy, wholesome and triumphant Christians will begin to shine as light in a dark world. Saints who love the Lord will experience freedom from nagging, satan-inspired problems.

Situations that border on satanic attacks which many believers have erroneously accepted as the will of God will give way to total freedom. Untimely death, embarrassing poverty, mysterious sicknesses, night attacks, demonic attacks in the family, joblessness, failure and other negative situations, which fill churches and Christian homes will become a thing of the past. Deliverance will set in and saints will possess their possessions. The Lord will do all these “in His time.” In sum, the revelation which God will give to you will usher every department of your life into the day of God’s power.

A lot of people have remained under captivity today because they do not understand the meaning and consequences of captivity. You

cannot be free from bondage unless you come into an understanding of the scriptural meaning of captivity. Let us, therefore, go into the scriptures for a thorough examination of the meaning of captivity. There is a very scary but apt statement in Isaiah 59:5: “They hatch cockatrice’ eggs, and weave the spider’s web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper.”

What a fitting description of what it means to be under bondage. Here, we see a picture of a well-rounded bondage. Anyone under this kind of bondage will be attacked from every angle with no where to turn to. Captivity is not palatable. It is better explained than experienced. Those who go through it know how painful and how awfully terrible it is. It is the worst experience anyone can have on this side of eternity.

Those who go through captivity generally have no breathing space, they are hedged in or hamstrung by multiple chains, to the extent that their total existence leaves much to be desired.

We come across another clear description and explanation of what it means to experience captivity in Job 42:10:

And the Lord turned the captivity of Job when he prayed for his friends. Also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.

Job’s experience clearly demonstrated what it means to be under captivity. He suffered multiple losses. His children died mysteriously at the prime of their youth. His business was attacked and overnight he lost everything he had. Bad news trailed one another – until it came to a point when his wife had to ask him to curse God and die. He was a victim of satanic attack. He went through captivity. However, the Lord visited him and delivered him from captivity.

The Bible clearly teaches that God turned his captivity. He came out of captivity and God gave him everything he lost and more. Towards the end of his life, God lavished stupendous blessings on him.

Psalm 68:18 happens to be one of my favourite scriptures.

Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them.

The word “captivity” here connotes bondage. It Is presented as a personality. The highest form of captivity is experienced by people when the oppressor is a personality.

Some people know through their experience that the strongman fighting against them is a high-ranking, demonic personality. Such people generally feel that their cases are hopeless. Are you suffering a terrible attack, perpetrated by a demonic personality? Do you think that there Is no hope? I encourage you to believe God for total deliverance. God will soon put captivity under bondage. He will bind your oppressors with heavenly chains. And you will be free and free indeed.

Someone has said that God has not created a man He cannot tame. No matter how powerful the personality behind your captivity Is, He will strip him of all his powers and make him bite the dust. The enemy has held you captive because he has overpowered you. But the moment the powers of your enemy are taken away from him, he will be reduced to toothless dogs that cannot bite.

I remember an incident that took place many years ago. I was a member of a school relay team. Soon after the race started, the boy on the first leg was far ahead of all our opponents. It was dear that we were going to win. He maintained the lead and passed the baton to the second boy. Again, we maintained a dear lead. When the baton was handed over to the third boy, he ran and maintained the lead. There was a very big gap between him and the boy who was coming In the second position. Members of our house were jubilant They felt cocksure that if the baton should get to me at that rate, our house would win the relay race. Suddenly, the baton fell off from the hand of the boy who was to hand It over to me. He turned back to pick the baton but discovered that It could not be found anywhere on the track; it had fallen far away into the bush.

Running without the baton was useless. So, he made frantic efforts to locate the baton. I did not know what to do. Although I was the fastest runner In our team, I had to wait for the baton. By the time he found the baton, and made a spirited effort to pass It to me, the race was over. We-lost out The baton became our undoing. Although we were to come first, we came last The whole school was surprised.

That is exactly what happened when Jesus overcame satan. The table was turned against the enemy. The baton, the symbol of power, found its way into the bush. That is exactly how God will take your captivity captive and give you total freedom. Your captor will lose his baton and you will walk out of captivity. Can you say Amen to that?

Captivity is synonymous with bondage. These two words have something in common. Both can be used to describe a situation in which your freedom is hindered or taken away outright. For example, a man who is imprisoned in Lagos, Nigeria, cannot decide to go for shopping in England. Neither can he enjoy his liberty. Why? He is under captivity. The devil is subtle and cunning. He places people under bondage without allowing them to know what is happening. Such people might even feel that they are free. It takes God to open their eyes and set them free.

Recently I listened to a white woman on the television. She narrated her own kind of captivity, saying, “If I wanted to go to the shop to buy something, I would spent four hours applying make-ups. Whenever I had an evening outing, I would normally start in the morning to make up. I would apply cosmetics, and special make-up effects for eight hours before I go out But it never dawned on me that I was under bondage.” Her confession shows that there are many levels of bondage.

There is no true freedom outside Christ. Those outside Christ, who claim that they are free and open-minded, are deceiving themselves. Free-thinkers, agnostics, atheists and the so-called philosophers are manipulated by the devil. They are under captivity. Those who are afraid of guns, threats, death, accidents and noise are not free. They are living under bondage. When your mind and soul are bound, you

have lost everything. That is why the devil always targets the human mind. Once that is captured, he has got everything. If you allow the devil to tamper with your mind and your soul, he has captured you completely.

Only those who are truly free can experience and enjoy abundant life. However, freedom is not cheap. This fact is illustrated by the story of the Philipian Jailer and Paul and Silas. Paul and Silas were arrested and punished, having committed no crime against the state. Their feet were chained in the dungeon. Instead of complaining and crying, they turned the prison into an arena of praise and worship concert.

The Bible says “And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises to God.” God was so moved by the music that He caused an earthquake in the prison. It was such a violent tremor that every prisoner’s chain was loosed. The prison warder was so nonplused that he came trembling and asked Paul and Silas: “What shall I do to be saved?” The earthquake was God’s instrument for setting the captives free. The deliverance of Paul and Silas was so amazing that everyone around knew that something great had happened.

LEVELS/TYPES OF CAPTIVITY

Some people are so bound that they would attempt to attack those who are free.

Many are walking upside down all through their life time.

A lot of people suffer from what I call inherited captivity. Such people became bound right from the womb. They started their lives on a deficit note.

A group of people also go into captivity as a result of personal decision.

Apart from these groups, there are people who are made captives by force. They hate captivity, yet they are forcefully held under bondage.

This reminds me of the story of a particular sister who hates cassava meal in real life. But she had a dream in which she saw a strange face who forced her to eat cassava meal. She protested but the evil “night caterer” tied her hands, overpowered her and fed her until she felt like vomiting. By the time she woke up the next day, she was as heavy as lead. That was the beginning of a number of mysterious sicknesses. That is an example of what it means to be forced into captivity.

There is also accidental captivity. A particular person was supposed to get into trouble, but another person altogether walked into the situation and became a captive by accident. How do you explain the plight of someone who came to work everyday and did his job excellently but came late accidentally on the very day his boss decided to sack all late comers? That is an example of accidental bondage.

There is also ignorant captivity. Some people are under captivity but are completely ignorant. All these examples of captivity are true life situations.

It is better to starve and be free than to be a fat slave. Lean liberty is better than fat slavery. Unknown to most people, what they refer to as freedom is merely a form of bondage.

This is not a popular message. Undoubtedly, it will cause commotion in the kingdom of darkness. You cannot read this book and remain the same. The problems in your life will bow before the word of God.

Many people are going through pain, agony and terrible suffering in spite of the fact that they are always fasting and praying. For such people wonder why their prayers have remained unanswered? The reason is not farfetched. God cannot waste His blessings on a man who is inside a cage. He will rather prefer that you first get out of the cage before He gives you His blessing.

Many Africans spend their entire life time inside all forms and shades of cages. That is why many Africans are backward. The rain

of blessing may be falling but a man who is in prison will not benefit from it. Even if he sees it through the window he cannot get out of the prison. He is under bondage.

At this point, I want you to make this powerful confession. It is also a powerful prayer point. The aggressive manner with which you say it will determine what will take place in your life from now on:

I refuse to be caged, in the name of Jesus.

You must repeat the prayer point until the anointing that delivers from bondage comes upon your life.

Jesus is a specialist in reversing the work of the devil. Where He finds darkness He turns it to light. He changes poverty to prosperity. He cancels curses and turns them into blessings. He sets the oppressed free and makes him an overcomer. He replaces fear with peace. He removes ill-luck and brings in divine favour. He is a specialist in destroying captivity and setting the oppressed free. No matter what kind of captivity you are in, Jesus will set you free. He has declared, “The spirit of the Lord is upon me, for He has anointed me to proclaim liberty to the captives and the opening of the eyes to the blind and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Unfortunately there are people who find themselves in helpless situations. They may not be responsible for such ugly situations, yet they suffer.

Recently, I came across a pathetic situation. A young girl happened to be very brilliant, but she had to stop schooling because her parents were poor. As the parents were wondering what to do about the situation, a 45-year old man came around and promised to help them. The rich man promised to sponsor the girl if her parents would give her out to him in marriage. They had to give their eight-year old daughter to a 45-year old husband.

The man began to finance the girl’s education. She finished secondary school and continued her education. However, she never

liked the man. But the man had spent a lot of money on her. She discovered that her parents’ situation imposed captivity on her.

Another lady battled with a stubborn problem. Her sexual organ was damaged permanently. What happened was that a 50-year old man raped her when she was two. That is another form of captivity.

A man found that because of his background, he was unable to keep any of the four women he married. He never grew up to know his parents and he stayed with four groups of foster parents at different times. He developed a negative attitude as a result of what he was exposed to. He was therefore harsh and wicked to everyone he came across. Every woman he married discovered that he was a strange fellow and packed away. That is another kind of captivity.

Are you in any form of captivity? What kind of captivity? Perhaps you can recollect, right now, that you were once intelligent, successful and prosperous but now everything has turned upside down. That is captivity.

Perhaps you were once so wealthy that you could sponsor ten people in the university. But today you can’t afford one decent meal in a day. That is satanic captivity.

Maybe your situation has become so bad that you feel like dying.

That is captivity.

Perhaps you were once robust, ebullient and healthy but today you are sickly, haggard and unkempt. You are now suffering from two or three incurable diseases. That is captivity.

Perhaps something went wrong with your husband and he suddenly lost every interest in you. That is also captivity.

Who knows? You might have made several efforts to improve your situation. It is also possible that you have battled with negative thoughts. You might have been dissatisfied with yourself wondering why you ever existed. If you are always fond of having a low estimation or negative opinion about yourself, then you are under captivity.

If things are getting worse in spite of all the efforts you are making, you are under captivity.

If you are always oppressed by the spirit of confusion, then you are under captivity.

Perhaps, you have been having terrible nightmares and you are scared by ordinary ants or cockroaches, then you are under bondage.

If you see what others do not see, like images and apparitions, then you are under serious captivity.

Recently a man came to me for counselling and talked for one hour non-stop. He painted several pictures of what he had been going through. When he stopped, I gave him some prayer points and told him to pray them with all his energy. I expected him to pray for a long period, judging from the way he had talked with me. To my surprise, he slept off and was snoring loudly not quite five minutes after he started praying. I discovered that he was under bondage.

What makes a man sleep off when he is supposed to pray some very serious prayer points? Captivity.

What is behind hatred and bitterness towards other people? Captivity.

A lot of things which we often take for granted are evidences of captivity. Irrational or violent anger by people who appear so gentle that they cannot hurt a fly, is an evidence of captivity. When such people are confronted by those they offended they become awfully sorry.

Those who suffer from restlessness are also under captivity. Those who cannot stay in one place for two minutes without being restless are under captivity.

What of extreme sluggishness and slumber when handling important things?

Why do people go into coma and lose consciousness?

Why do certain families go through regular mysterious attacks?

Or why are some people complaining of unseen objects walking all over their bodies? The only explanation is captivity.

Morbid fear, heart-rending anxiety, over-eating, excessive murmuring and grumbling, uncontrollable sexual urge, wickedness and all forms of irrational behaviour are evidences of captivity.

SATANIC STRATEGY OF CAPTIVITY

The devil has his strategy or methods of putting men under bondage. The same old devil is still using the same old methods. Nothing has changed. What the devil did in the garden of Eden is exactly what he has continued to repeat time and again.

How did satan start his captivity business?

• IN THE BEGINNING

Let us take a journey into the beginning of mankind’s history. God created Adam. The name Adam means “red earth” or “of the ground” or “taken out of the ground”.

The location and the climate of the Garden of Eden suggests that the first occupiers were blacks. Bible scholars have told us that Adam did not resemble the white man. Again, the Bible and science agree that the first man was of African origin and that all languages originated from Africa.

Adam was a unique person. If he had continued in that manner he would have turned the whole world into Eden. The name of Adam’s wife, Eve, means ‘life’ or ‘living’. The first couple entered into captivity through satanic strategy.

The first strategy that the devil used against Adam and Eve was to make them listen to his lies. Eve listened and the whole family got

into trouble.

The second strategy used by the devil is that, he put a question mark on what God had said.

The third strategy? He made Eve to doubt God and believe the devil.

What is the fourth strategy? Satan tempted Eve and made her to nurse an unholy ambition – to be like God.

Then the devil went ahead to apply the fifth strategy by appealing to their appetite. That was how they got into satanic captivity.

Sometime ago, a man was given a delicious food by his neighbour. The aroma of the food was so inviting that he decided to keep it until he had time to savour the sweetness of the special meal. Somehow, he felt satisfied and decided that the special meal would wait for a longer time. After all, the food was his own.

Somehow he was awake until midnight. He decided to open the food flask in which he kept the food. What he discovered gave him the greatest shock of his life. Immediately he opened the flask a bird flew out. He did not know when the flask fell off from his hand. The food had disappeared. In its place was a bird. Unknown to him the food had been given to him with the sole aim of initiating him into witchcraft. Had he eaten the food he would have become a witch exactly at midnight.

Satan’s strategy has not changed. People get into bondage by listening to the devil, doubting what God has said, nursing unholy ambition, appetite, etc.

I had an experience many years ago, in far away Zimbabwe. I went there to attend an international conference on the latest technology in medical research. I noticed that there was a lady participant who made sure that she sat in front of me whenever we went for our meals at the cafeteria. She always stared at me.

One day she took up courage and told me: “Dr. Daniel, I just like you. I admire you.” I told her that she should not admire me unless she was ready to admire fire. She was surprised. She looked at me again and said: “How can somebody admire fire?” She kept on telling me that she admired me until one day when she said: “What about this fire thing?” I told her that she had to take some prayer points to understand what fire means.

The first prayer point she took was, “Oh Lord, rain the fire of the Holy Ghost upon my life and let whatever is against You in my life manifest and be destroyed, in the name of Jesus.” She had not prayed for more than two minutes when she began to react violently. She began to scream, “Pastor, I want you to stop this prayer. I can’t stand the fire. It is hurting and destroying my beautiful demonic bodyguards. These girls are my attendants. I am their queen. Please, stop the fire.” That was how the Lord exposed the satanic agent.

That lady must have captured many innocent souls. I feel sorry today for the men who are still running around her and committing immorality with her. Unknown to such captives they are dealing with a wicked demonic queen.

Another incident took place recently. A man died and was wheeled to the mortuary. The hospital attendants noticed some signs of life in him and wheeled him back to the ward. Later, he sneezed and came back to life. He got up immediately and said “Please, discharge me. I am going back to my house. I will never commit adultery again.” What really happened to the man who rose from the dead was that before he died he had committed adultery with a married woman, who, unknown to him, was a demon agent.

Immediately he died, the woman appeared to him saying, “Foolish man, did you think that I was a human being? You made the greatest mistake of your life by sleeping with me. You have slept with a demonic agent, that is why you died.” Now, he has vowed that he will never commit adultery again.

It is good to obey the word of God. Whenever we preach and tell men and women to maintain moral sanctity, there are people who feel

that pastors are trying to curtail their liberty. Sin leads to bondage. It is easy to commit sin. But facing the consequences is a terrible experience.

• DISOBEDIENCE

The greatest cause of captivity is disobedience. All those who travel on the highway of disobedience have deliberately chosen the expressway that leads to bondage. That was what the devil used to lead Adam and Eve into bondage.

• HOUSEHOLD EVIL ACTIVITIES

Later, Adam and Eve gave birth to two sons known as Cain and Abel. Cain means possession or acquisition. Abel, on the other hand, means breath or vanity. In other words, possession killed vanity. That incident reveals another strategy which the devil uses to lead men into captivity. Household wickedness. Cain and Abel were children of the same parents. Yet one killed the other. This illustrates the wickedness of household enemies. Many people have been brought into captivity as a result of the activities of household enemies.

Sometime ago, a man decided to trace the root of his problem. But he went to the wrong place. He consulted a fetish priest who told him that his mother- in-law was the source of his problems. The man asked the priest what he should do to solve the problem. The fetish priest told him to go back to his mother-in-law and beg her.

The man was so naive that he travelled out of Lagos to his mother-in-laws village. As soon as the woman sighted him she asked what the problem was. The man complained that after getting married to her daughter, things had become unbearably tough. The woman looked straight into his eyeballs and said, “Why won’t things be difficult? You people are enjoying yourselves in Lagos. Why did you buy a modern mattress for your wife while you continue to allow me to sleep on a mat? Things will definitely be difficult for you until you buy a mattress for me.”

The man turned to the mother-in-law and said, “Is that all?” The woman said, “No, there is another thing. You have something in your house that blows fresh air when it is hot.” “Do you mean a standing fan?” the man cut in. “Yes,” said the woman, “why have you allowed me to suffer intense heat in the village while both of you are enjoying modern amenities in Lagos? If you want us to talk at all you must go back and buy a mattress and a standing fan for me immediately. Then I will tell you the source of your problems.”

The man ran to Lagos and withdrew money from his account to meet up with his mother-in- law’s request. He carried the items to the village and presented them to the mother-in-law. It was at that point that she took him to the back of her house and showed him a withered tree. “Look at this tree,” she said, “as long as this tree is dry and withered, you will continue to experience hard times. Now that you have learned your lesson you are going to experience a respite. I am going to pour water on the tree. Immediately that is done, you will experience prosperity.” The old woman entered her room and brought out water from a calabash and poured it on the tree. She then told him to go back to Lagos and expect positive changes.

When he got to Lagos, true to her words, things changed immediately. They began to experience good times. After a few months, everything went down again. It was their worst condition. He rushed back to the village, only to discover that both the woman and the tree had died. That was how the family jumped from frying pan to fire. The mother-in-law was no longer alive to proffer any solution to their problems. That is the work of household wickedness.

• ADDICTION

As the story of the early history of mankind goes, Adam gave birth to Seth. Seth means compensation or substitute. Later, Enoch was born. Enoch gave birth to Methuselah which means “when he is dead he shall be sent.” Along the line Noah was born. Noah means rest or comfort. Later, the flood came upon the world.

Together with his family Noah survived the flood. Later, he planted vineyard and started to drink wine. Thus, he became the first man in the Bible to become a drunk or an addict. That leads us to another strategy which the devil uses to lure men and women into captivity. Today, if you are drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes or if you are taking some hard drugs, you are under a serious captivity.

Noah gave birth to children. His first son was Shem. The name Shem means “a name” The Israelites are the descendants of Shem. Noah gave birth to another son, Ham. Ham means heat or hot. It also means black. The black race are descendants of Ham. His third son, Japhet, means enlargement or extension. The Europeans or the whites in general are the descendants of Japhet.

• NAME

Why have I taken so much pains to examine the meaning of these names? It is simply because names are another strategy used by satan to lead men and women into captivity.

Some people’s problems are tied to the names they bear. If you bear a satanic name, or if you bear a cursed name, it will serve as a platform for satanic activity.

The devil uses names to put people into bondage.

Names have basic functions.

One, names are for identification.

Two, it reveals something about you.

Three, it can ascribe something to you.

Four, it can personify; it brings something into manifestation.

Five, it reveals your family background.

Whenever the negative experiences and the problems which a man is going through aligns with the name which he bears, it is an

evidence of captivity. The fact that your life is upside down in consonance with your name is an evidence that your name is cursed.

Jacob for example, had to change Rachel’s last child’s name, Benoni, which means son of my sorrow, to Benjamin which means the son of my right hand. If he had retained that name he would have remained in sorrow.

The names which human beings bear on earth are of so much concern to heavenly beings that they sometimes have to intervene and change bad names to good ones.

Names have spiritual power which can influence the life of the bearer. If you bear a cursed name, it can spell disaster for you.

I know born again Christians who have suffered untold hardships as a result of bad names. Names are important in the Bible. When John was born, he was given a significant name which means God is salvation. His name pointed to the coming of the Saviour. When Jesus was born He was given a name which means “He shall save His people from their sins.”

What is your name?

Have you ever pondered on the meaning of your name?

Those whose names align with unpleasant life experiences are under captivity.

Is your name attached to a local idol?

Does your name imply evil?

Is your name dedicated to a local African god or goddess?

Does your name have anything to do with market days, trees, animals or notable ancestors who fought inter-tribal wars and killed many people?

Does your name have anything to do with evil spirits, familiar, and marine spirits?

What is your name?

What does your name mean in your local language?

Does your name suggest that you are a reincarnation of your father or mother?

Is there anything like wickedness, vengeance or retribution in your name?

These are questions you must answer.

When a Christian bears a name which suggests evil or demonic beings, he does himself a lot of harm by retaining such a name. It is also dangerous to bear a combination of a good Christian name and a demonic idolatrous name, because a cursed name authorises some demons to exercise certain powers over your life.

Again, if your name is meaningless you must do something about it. Circumstances surrounding the naming ceremony of some people are also sources of trouble.

Names which were given as a result of sad parental experiences are another source of problem. Those who were named in the shrines of fetish priests or by powerful witch doctors and those who were named after demonic divination are under captivity. It is important that you seek to know the meaning of your name.

SOLUTION TO EVIL NAMES

What then is the solution?

First, you may have to drop the evil name and pick up a new one.

Second, you also have to go ahead and destroy the spiritual foundation and principle behind the former name.

Third, by prayer and faith you must bring into manifestation the blessing of your new name. Some people may not really agree with these facts. But if you study the scriptures and find out what

happened to those who bore evil names, you will make up your mind to have nothing to do with bad names.
